Those of us already involved in Junior Roller Derby know how exciting and fulfilling it is. We also know how demanding it can be so we take our roles seriously as coaches, referees, and NSOs.
A sport growing in popularity has many demands and Junior Roller Derby is no different. We are always looking for volunteers and role models.
Referees practice with the skaters to get them accustomed to whistles, people skating alongside the pack, and to help explain penalties when they happen. Practice is twice a week, one day during the week and on Saturday mornings (8AM). Bout days and scrimmages are also mandatory for referees to attend. Beyond the time commitment is the need to learn the rules and have the gear to finish the job. This is no light-hearted commitment, but the payoff is enormous. You’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s athletic endeavor that will last them a lifetime.
NSOs are non-skating officials and are utilized mainly during scrimmages and bouts. They are timekeepers, penalty trackers, and scorekeepers.
